Hempcrete
Explained
Hempcrete is a building material made from hemp hurd, lime, and water. It serves as natural insulation, resisting wetness, mold, and decay. It can be used not only for walls, floors, ceilings, and roofs, but windows as well. Builders create monolithic hempcrete walls by molding and casting the mixture into formwork.
After casting, drying time for hempcrete is mainly influenced by mix moisture content. Walls may take 2-8 weeks or longer to dry. Dried hempcrete can be both insulation and plaster substrate, like a light straw-clay wall system. Besides casting, builders can use spraying or precast blocks, eliminating on-site mixing. However, joints or overlap in precast materials could impact thermal performance.
