Demonstration Builds

Initiative # 3

Align with hempcrete & “Build Demonstration 5+”

At Indigenous Habitat Institute, our third initiative revolves around collaborating closely with communities to kickstart various sustainable housing projects. We strongly believe in the importance of creating diverse housing options that cater to the specific needs and cultural context of each community, particularly on reservations.

One of our key focuses is on the construction of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), two-story buildings, and culturally inspired homes using innovative materials like hempcrete. The versatility of hempcrete as a sustainable building material is at the forefront of our exploration. To deepen our understanding of this material's capabilities, we are encouraging each community we engage with to construct five or more structures utilizing hempcrete.

By incorporating different building techniques like spray application, pre-made panels, and various other methods, we aim to showcase the flexibility and adaptability of hempcrete in construction. We firmly believe that experimentation and exploration are crucial in paving the way for more sustainable and culturally relevant housing solutions. Our mantra, “If we build it, they will come," underscores our commitment to creating spaces that not only meet practical needs but also resonate with the community on a deeper level.

Together with our partners and the communities we work with, we are dedicated to pushing boundaries, embracing innovation, and ultimately, creating homes that are not just structures but embodiments of culture, sustainability, and resilience.
