Indigenous Habitat Institute
Our Mission
The Indigenous Habitat Institute (IHI) was formed in 2021 with the mission to improve the health & well-being of indigenous people, veterans and other under-served communities through incorporating cultural and holistic values in how we build homes and communities. We are doing this in part by identifying existing bio-based building materials that have established professional rules and executing them through professional certified workforce training. Our goal is to eventually develop regional research playgrounds to maximize ecosystems that address challenges facing respective communities and build with these materials.
IHI Initiatives
One of our first initiatives is to assist with the transfer of knowledge of the French professional hempcrete building industry to Turtle Island (North America) and develop the infrastructure to carry out this carbon negative building knowledge, then model how to roll it out from community to community through sustainability and building circular economies. This includes teaching how to renovate existing structures using certified professional materials and building using certified prefabricated hempcrete panels. Developing partnerships with universities, municipalities, tribes, organizations and private enterprises will help us bring the stakeholders together and lift the industry together.
